This has necessitated pulling the old stovetop percolator out of retirement and back into active duty.
1st attempt. Did not go well.

Three days later, I'm still finding coffee and coffee grounds in the most unlikely of places.

What the hell did you do? This is funny. We are using the stove top one all the time (just a different model) but it has never distributed coffee evenly all over the house?
The little removable screen between the coffee and the top compartment - make sure you use it!
Otherwise the pressure just builds downstairs - and KABOOM.
